Colts Notebook: Taylor could miss Sunday’s game

INDIANAPOLIS — Jonathan Taylor is feeling better, but the Indianapolis Colts running back still hasn’t been able to practice this week.

Taylor suffered what’s been reported as a mild high-ankle sprain during the fourth quarter of last week’s 27-24 win against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He said the injury is not as severe as some recent ankle issues he’s faced, but it will still be a process to get back onto the field.

Ankle injuries are particularly challenging for running backs, and Taylor said there are several benchmarks he must reach to know he’s ready to play Sunday at the Jacksonville Jaguars (0-4).

“Really being able to move around,” he said. “Really being able to get in and out of cuts, being able to explode, burst. Especially at my position (or) defensive back, those are all heavy cutting positions. So that’s the biggest thing.”

If Taylor can’t go, Trey Sermon likely will get the start.

Playing primarily on third downs and in obvious passing situations, Sermon has just nine carries for 24 yards and a touchdown this season.

He rushed 35 times for 160 yards for Indianapolis last season, including 17 carries for 88 yards in a Week 15 game against the Steelers.

Sermon has 87 carries for 370 yards and two touchdowns over four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles and Colts.

Tyler Goodson also is an option. He rushed 11 times for 69 yards last year against Pittsburgh and had 13 carries for 87 yards overall in his first NFL season.

Goodson does not have a carry through the first four games this season.

Evan Hull and Trent Pennix also are available on the practice squad.

Hull had one catch for 6 yards and one carry for 1 yard as a rookie last season before being placed on injured reserve. Pennix would be making his NFL regular-season debut.

The Colts (2-2) have weathered a storm of injuries to win in each of the past two weeks, and a host of starters are dealing with ailments this week.

“I like the way our team has been battling,” Indianapolis head coach Shane Steichen said. “Obviously, a division opponent on the road is going to be huge, going into Jacksonville this week. So I like the way they’re fighting for sure.”

Taylor will do his best to take the field.

He has 72 carries for 349 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 4.8 yards per attempt through the first four weeks of the season.

His presence certainly would help the Colts’ efforts to get their first win at Jacksonville since 2014. But he won’t rush the process.

“It just sucks when you’re not out there competing,” Taylor said. “It’s part of the game, but you just have to take it day-by-day and just keep your nose to the grindstone and just try to get back out there.”

INJURY REPORT

Quarterback Anthony Richardson (oblique) was limited in Thursday’s practice for the second straight day.

Steichen said Wednesday part of the challenge will be balancing the need to get backup Joe Flacco reps in case he must start against the Jaguars against the effort to gauge Richardson’s readiness.

“That’s the deal we’ve got to figure out, obviously, as we’re going (Wednesday) and (Thursday) and (Friday),” Steichen said. “But, again, (it’s about) the mental reps. If (Richardson is practicing) in a limited basis, making sure he’s locked in back there getting those mental reps.

“And then when he is in there, he’s got to go perform obviously in practice and show that he’s ready to go.”

Linebacker Zaire Franklin (illness), right tackle Braden Smith (knee) and linebacker Grant Stuard (heel) returned to full practice Thursday.

Center Ryan Kelly (neck), cornerback Kenny Moore II (hip), defensive end Kwity Paye (quadricep) and Taylor did not practice.

Kelly, Moore and Paye missed last week’s win against Pittsburgh with their injuries.

Linebacker Yasir Abdullah (neck), running back Tank Bigsby (shoulder), wide receiver Gabe Davis (shoulder), tight end Evan Engram (hamstring), running back Travis Etienne (shoulder), defensive end Josh Hines-Allen (concussion), cornerback Jarrian Jones (shoulder), linebacker Devin Lloyd (knee) and safety Darnell Savage (quadricep) were limited for the Jaguars.

Hines-Allen and Lloyd were upgraded after sitting out Wednesday’s practice.
