VALDOSTA – A two-out, two-run third inning homer by Addison Waring was the difference as Lowndes defeated Colquitt County 2-0 on Tuesday in the first game of a Region 1-6A series in Valdosta.
The series will conclude with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Packer Park.
The loss was the first in the region for the Lady Packers who are now 9-1 in league games and 14-7 overall.
Lowndes will take a 4-4 region record into the Wednesday twin bill. The Vikettes are 12-7.
The Lady Packers had won six in a row and nine of their previous 10 heading into the game.
But Colquitt managed just three singles and a double by Montana Tatum against the Vikettes Madelyn Dailey and stranded five base runners.
Dailey struck out 13 Lady Packers.
Colquitt started Peyton Arrington and she was superb except for the home run pitch to Waring. She allowed just five hits and a walk and struck out seven.
But in the third, Ellie Shaw reached on a one-out single.
Arrington got the second out on a fly ball to center field.
But after fouling off two straight pitches, Waring took a 1-2 Arrington pitch deep over the center field fence for the 2-0 lead.
And although Arrington kept the Vikettes off the scoreboard the next three innings, the damage was done.
Arrington, RaJayla McBride and Lilah Thompson each had a single for the Lady Packers.
Also on Tuesday, Tift County blanked Camden County 1-0 on a 1-hitter by Lily Robinson.
Their region series also will continue on Wednesday.
