Softball team wins doubleheader; Senior Night set for Thursday

MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County softball team took both games of a Region 1-6A doubleheader at Valdosta on Tuesday, keeping its region record unblemished as it prepares to honor its seniors on Thursday.

The Lady Packers got six runs in the top of the seventh inning to win Tuesday’s first game 11-3, then needed just three innings to claim the second game 18-1.

First pitch for the finale of the three-game region series is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday at Packer Park.

The annual Senior Night recognition will begin at 4:30 p.m.

With the Tuesday wins over Valdosta, the Lady Packers raise their region record 5-0 and are now 10-6 overall.

Valdosta is 0-5 in the region. The Lady Wildcats dropped three straight to Camden County two weeks ago, 8-0, 15-4 and 16-0.

The Lady Packers led Game 1 on Tuesday 5-0 before the Lady Wildcats scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and added another in the sixth to pull to within two.

But Colquitt quickly put the game out of reach in the seventh.

A two-run double by Kamry Paulk put the Lady Packers up 7-3. A double by Rhylee Tillery one out later drove in Paulk to make it 8-3.

A Libby Wetherington single drove in Aziah McNeal to extend the lead to 9-3. A series of Valdosta errors allowed the final two runs to score.

RaJayla McBride led the Lady Packers with three hits, including a triple.

Wetherington had two hits, including her first home run of the season. She drove in a pair of runs and now leads the team with 10 RBIs.

Tillery had a pair of doubles and Rheygan Harrell added a triple and a single.

Paulk drove in three runs.

Arrington went the distance in the circle and did not give up an earned run. Now 4-2, she gave up seven hits while striking out eight and lowering her ERA to 2.64.

Building on the six-run seventh inning, the Lady Packers scored eight runs in the first inning, seven more in the second and three more in the third inning of the second-game blowout.

McBride raised her batting average to .388 by going 3-for-3 with a triple and her first home run. She also drove in five runs and was 6-for-7 in the doubleheader.

Arrington also had three hits and raised her batting average to a team-leading .447.

Also contributing to the 14-hit attack were Harrell and Montana Tatum, each of whom had two hits. One of Tatum’s was a double. Harrell drove in three runs.

Paulk pitched all three innings, giving up one run and one hit. She continues to own the Lady Packers best ERA at 1.14.
