MOULTRIE — A 13-year-old at C.A. Gray Junior High School was arrested in connection with the threat of a school shooting.
The juvenile is the latest of several across South Georgia who have been charged with threats or actions in the week since a 14-year-old killed four people and wounded nine others in a shooting at a high school in Winder, Ga.
The Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday’s arrest in a statement posted to the agency’s Facebook page.
About 12:20 p.m., school staff were alerted to a threat made by the student to carry out a school shooting, the CCSO said. C.A. Gray staff and school resource officers with the sheriff’s office took the student into custody within minutes.
No weapons were found in the student’s possession, the CCSO’s statement said.
The student, who is charged with terroristic threats and disruption of a public school, has been detained by the Department of Juvenile Justice. The Colquitt County School District is handling all disciplinary actions related to the student’s behavior, the sheriff’s office said.
The incident underscores the critical importance of students reporting any suspicious activity or threats directly to school staff or law enforcement, the statement said.
“We cannot stress enough how vital it is for students to speak up and notify a trusted adult or law enforcement when they hear or see something troubling,” Sheriff Rod Howell said. “Posting on social media can delay a response, while direct communication ensures that school staff and law enforcement can act quickly to prevent a tragedy. The swift actions of the staff and our school resource officers made all the difference today.”
The sheriff’s office takes all threats seriously, the statement said, and it will continue to work closely with the school district to ensure the safety and security of the schools.
“We encourage parents to talk to their children about the importance of reporting threats and the serious consequences of making them,” the CCSO statement said.
On Sept. 4, two teachers and two 14-year-old students were killed in the gunfire at Apalachee High School in Barrow County. 14-year-old Colt Gray is charged as an adult with four counts of murder, and his father has been charged as well for having bought the boy the rifle that was used.
Since then, according to media reports:
• A student at MacIntyre Park Middle School in Thomasville was arrested Sept. 5 after another student saw a gun in her bag. Since then, the child’s mother has also been charged because she allegedly knew her child was in possession of the firearm.
• A 13-year-old was charged Thursday in connection with a shooting threat at Brooks County Middle School.
• An 11-year-old girl was charged Friday in connection with a shooting threat at Valdosta Middle School.
• A 17-year-old was arrested Friday in connection with online threats to Crisp County High School.
• Two 12-year-old Crisp County Middle School students were detained Monday after a School Resource Officer was notified of threats made by text.
Atlanta News First has reported multiple youths, ranging from 12 to 17 years old, have been charged in several incidents across North Georgia too.
