Four die in South Georgia wrecks

VALDOSTA — Four people died in South Georgia wrecks over the Labor Day weekend, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Lowndes County

Two people died in an accident Sunday in Lowndes County, a statement from the patrol said.

Around 5:35 p.m., troopers responded to a two-vehicle wreck on the Lakeland Highway at Tower Road. A Ford Fusion was heading west on the Lakeland Highway while a Nissan Pathfinder was heading east.

The driver of the Fusion failed to maintain lane and got into an eastbound lane, hitting the Pathfinder, the statement said.

The Fusion’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene; the Pathfinder’s driver was taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead. Two children in the Pathfinder were hospitalized with injuries.

The names of the fatalities were not yet available Tuesday.

Grady County

A single-vehicle wreck killed a man Saturday in Grady County, the patrol said.

Around 6:46 p.m., troopers headed to a wreck on Ridge Road at Elphino Road. A car was traveling on Ridge Road when the driver failed to maintain lane, left the road and the car overturned, ejecting the driver, who was pronounced dead on the scene, the statement said.

The victim’s name was not yet available Tuesday.

Cook County

A Florida woman was killed Sunday in a car fire caused by a collision, the state patrol said.

Around 1 a.m., troopers were sent to a crash on I-75 northbound near mile marker 49. A Hyundai Kona driven by a Jacksonville, Florida, woman was heading north on the interstate when her car was hit in the rear by a Chevrolet Corvette driven by a Hahira man, the statement said. The Kona was engulfed in flames with the driver still inside; she was unable to escape and succumbed to her injuries, the patrol said.

The driver of the Corvette was taken to Tift Regional Medical Center with serious injuries and later taken to an Augusta hospital. Two northbound lanes of I-75 were closed for about 3.5 hours.

The patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating.

Statewide, 19 people died on the highways in Georgia during the Labor Day weekend, the patrol said.

Police pursuit in Berrien County

In addition to the fatalities, a pursuit involving gunfire erupted Monday in Berrien County, a statement from the state patrol said.

Around 6:21 p.m., a trooper from the Tifton GSP post tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on Allenville Road in Berrien County; the driver of the vehicle refused to stop, leading to a chase, the statement said.

The trooper performed a PIT maneuver, which led to gunfire, the patrol said.

The incident is being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
