He was Georgia’s leading rusher last season and won two National Championship rings as a member of the Bulldogs.

He is still the all-time leading rusher at Colquitt County High School.

Four other former Packers are still with NFL teams as the season nears its start this week.

In his second season with Minnesota, Jay Ward is listed as the backup strong safety for the Vikings, who open their season on September 8 on the road against the New York Giants.

Veteran offensive lineman Cam Erving was released by the Houston Texans on August 27, but the next day was re-signed to the practice squad.

Defensive lineman T.J. Smith was waived by the Carolina Panthers on August 27, but was re-signed to the practice squad.

The Las Vegas Raiders released tight end John Samuel Shenker on August 27, but he, too, was signed the next day to the practice squad.

A number of other former Packers played in college football games over the last week, including Omar Daniels who started his second straight game in the secondary for Georgia Tech.

In helping lead the Yellow Jackets to a 35-12 win over Georgia State and a 2-0 record, Daniels had two solo tackles.

Georgia Tech is 2-0 for the first time in eight years.

• Wide receiver Le’Meke Brockington caught a 22-yard pass for Minnesota in the Golden Gophers 19-17 season-open loss to North Carolina.

• Red-shirt freshman Jack Luttrell had a punt return for eight yards in the University of Arizona’s 61-39 season-opening victory over New Mexico.

Luttrell played his freshman season at Tennessee in 2023.

Turk Daniels, who started four seasons and never missed a game for Colquitt County, started at left guard for Carson-Newman as a freshman on Saturday in the Eagles 50-7 season-opening win over Reinhardt.

Playing across from Daniels was his former Colquitt County teammate, Reinhardt defensive tackle Ky’von Rivers, who had one solo and two assisted tackles.

Kamaar Bell, who transferred from Florida Atlantic this season, started at guard for South Carolina in the Gamecocks 23-19 win over Old Dominion.

Kaleb Dawson, listed as a red-shirt senior, started in the secondary for Alabama A&M in its 73-3 loss at Auburn.

The 6-foot, 215-pound senior had two solo and one assisted tackle against the Tigers.

Dawson also is serving as a graduate assistant coach for the Bulldogs.

Jaheim Ward, another former Colquitt County defensive back and brother of Jay Ward, had two solo tackles and four assists in Eastern Kentucky’s 56-7 loss to Mississippi State.

Tyler Walker caught two passes for 36 yards in West Alabama’s 16-15 season-opening victory over Miles on Saturday.

Ty French came off the bench to record a solo tackle in West Virginia’s 34-12 loss to Penn State.

French transferred this season from Gardner-Webb to play for the Mountaineers.
