Daniels, Fitzgerald get their seasons off to productive starts

MOULTRIE – Ryan Fitzgerald got his final season at Florida State off to a fine personal start with 52- and 59-yard field goals in the Seminoles 24-21 loss to Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland.

But a former Colquitt County teammate had a fine game in helping the Yellow Jackets pull off that early-season upset.

Omar Daniels, a red-shirt junior for Georgia Tech, started in the secondary and was credited with four tackles.

Daniels and Fitzgerald were teammates on the 2018 Colquitt County High team that went 14-1.

After playing at Kansas State in 2021 and 2022, Daniels transferred and played at Georgia Tech last season as well.

Freshman tight end Landen Thomas, another former Packers, saw some action for the Seminoles in Ireland.

A number of other former Colquitt County players are expected to be on the field in collegiate games this week, including at least two who are listed as starters.

Kamaar Bell, who transferred from Florida Atlantic to South Carolina this year, is listed as the starting left guard for the Gamecocks in their opener against Old Dominion.

Le’Meke Brockington, a junior receiver, will start for the University of Minnesota when the Golden Gophers play host to North Carolina on Saturday.

Other former Packers listed on their team’s depth charts for their games this weekend are Kamal Bonner, linebacker at North Carolina State; Ty French, linebacker at West Virginia; Ny Carr, receiver at Miami; and Jack Luttrell, free safety at Arizona.

Some 25 former Packers are listed on rosters of college football teams.

Eight current Packers were honored for their play in last Friday’s 52-14 victory over Monroe.

Offensive Player of the Week Day’Shawn Brown carried the football 10 times for 85 yards and a touchdown and also caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Cohen Lawson to help give the Packers a 7-0 lead.

Khalil Collins was named the Offensive Lineman of the Week after grading out at 88 percent with four pancake blocks.

Senior linebacker Bryce Toomer was the Defensive Player of the Week after recording nine tackles, including one for a loss, a sack and a quarterback hurry.

The Defensive Lineman of the Week honor went to Amari Wilson who had three solo tackles, three assists, two tackles for losses, a pair of sacks and two quarterback hurries.

Brett Fitzgerald was the Special Teams Player of the Week after converting after all seven Packers touchdowns, connecting on a 36-yard field goal, recovering his own onside kick and having four of his kickoffs result in touchbacks.

Senior offensive lineman Theron Allen, who has a cumulative grade point average of 99.82, was named the Academic Player of the Week.

Ethan Yingling was the Defensive Scout Team Player of the Week and Braden Venet was the Offensive Scout Team Player of the Week.

In addition to the Colquitt County varsity team’s game against North Gwinnett scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Hawg Pen, the seventh-grade team (1-0) will meet Tift County at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the stadium; the sixth-graders (0-1) will face Tift County after the seventh-grade game; the eighth-grade team (0-1) will play at Tift County on Thursday; the ninth-grade team (0-1) will meet Lowndes at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the high school; and the junior varsity team (1-0) will will play at 4 p.m. Thursday at Lowndes.
