Colquitt softball team wins one of three in Cobb County

MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County softball team won one of three games during a weekend trip to Cobb County and will take a 5-5 record into its 5:30 p.m. Monday game at Cairo.

The Lady Packers will be out to duplicate their August 12 home win over the Syrupmaids when they go to Cairo for their final tuneup before Tuesday’s Region 1-6A opener against Richmond Hill at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Packer Park.

The Colquitt girls began their appearance in the annual Buccaneer Bash with a 6-2 win over Sequoyah in Friday’s first game.

The Lady Packers dropped a 3-2 decision to Houston County in Friday’s second game and then were throttled by undefeated North Paulding on Saturday morning.

Against Sequoyah, Peyton Arrington went all five innings in the circle, giving up just two runs and four hits.

Colquitt scored three runs in the second and two more in the third to jump out to a 5-0 lead.

Montana Tatum drove in two of those second-inning runs with a two-out double and scored on an outfield error.

A bunt by Arrington and an infield error led to the two Lady Packer runs in the third.

Kamry Paulk’s sacrifice fly in the fourth drove in the final Colquitt County run.

Tatum and Lanie Burley each had two hits for the Lady Packers. RaJayla McBride had the others.

In Friday’s second game, Houston County scored three runs in the bottom of the first and made them stand up.

Starter Kamry Paulk gave up all three runs, but no more.

A Burley ground out drove in the first Colquitt County run in the fourth inning and Arrington singled in Gracie McKellar with the other run in the fifth.

But while Paulk was holding the Lady Bears scoreless over the final five innings, Colquitt could not plate a tying run.

On Saturday, North Paulding jumped out to an 8-1 lead pounded out 14 hits in its victory.

The Lady Packers had nine hits, but managed only single runs in the first, third and fifth innings.

McBride led the Lady Packers with three hits.

Rhylee Tillery had two hits, including a double.

Paulk, Arrington, Burley and Tatum all had singles.
