There are certain things and situations that exceed man’s vocabulary to adequately describe. Some are horrifying experiences so terrifying that they are suppressed in the recesses of the mind. Other encounters may be so exhilarating that one replays their occurrence over and over. If man experiences limitations in expressing things which pertain to the material world, then any attempt the describe the Person of Christ would, in the words of a songwriter, “drain the ocean dry.”
The Apostle John attempted to record numerous aspects of Jesus’ ministry on earth. Yet, as he closed His gospel, he was forced to this conclusion … “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written” (John 21:25 NIV).
Solomon, acclaimed as the wisest man on earth said … “When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to observe man’s labor on earth — his eyes not seeing sleep day or night — then I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all his efforts to search it out, man cannot discover its meaning. Even if a wise man claims he knows, he cannot really comprehend it” (Eccl 8:16-17 NIV).
What are those traits possessed by Christ that defy human comprehension but can be discerned and believed by faith? In the spiritual realm, an understanding of Divine truth must exceed rational thought or experience. Only faith provides the means to value and appreciate that our Lord is incomprehensible, and His love is immeasurable; that the heavens of heaven cannot contain Him though they are His handiwork. The Psalmist penned … “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge” (Ps 19:1-2 NIV).
Man cannot explain God’s beginning nor rid the mind of His existence. “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end” (Eccl 3:11 NIV). He is the Creator God whose “throne was established long ago; you are from all eternity” (Ps 93:2 NIV). “Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:3-4 NIV). Though some dismiss Him from their lives, it is impossible to experience life to its fullest without Him. Jesus said … “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10 NIV).
When Jesus was on this earth, the Pharisees couldn’t tolerate Him, but neither could they stop Him. Pilate couldn’t find any fault in Him nor could His enemies agree in their accusations. King Herod feared to kill Him and physical death had no power over Him since the grave could not contain Him. He is the risen Savior! He has always existed and He always will. He has no predecessor and no one will succeed Him. As God, there is no one before Him in eternity past and He ever lives throughout eternity. He is faultless and He rules in Justice.
His is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory forever and ever. “All you have made will praise you, O LORD; your saints will extol you. They will tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might, so that all men may know of your mighty acts and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations” (Ps 145:13 NIV). Yet, though Sovereign, possessing all power, might and glory, and because of His great love toward mankind … “he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross” (Phil 2:8 NIV)! “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! and that is what we are” (I John 3:1 NIV)! Incomprehensible — except by faith!
