MOULTRIE — A recent announcement of transportation funding throughout the state is directing $40 million toward a project in Colquitt and Worth counties.
Gov. Brian Kemp announced details of a $1.5 billion investment in transportation infrastructure on Thursday. The Fiscal Year 2024 budget distributes that money to a variety of projects through the Georgia Department of Transportation.
According to information provided with the announcement, $40 million is being directed toward the four-laning of Highway 133 from Mike Horne Road to north of the Worth County line. The money is expected to accelerate the project by a year.
“Over the last few years, we’ve welcomed unprecedented job creation to all regions of the Peach State, and this funding will ensure our already reliable infrastructure network can meet the needs of that incredible growth,” Kemp said.
Highway 133 runs from Albany, through Moultrie, to Valdosta. Projects to four-lane the Moultrie-to-Valdosta section were completed in 2019. The first of five projects to four-lane from Moultrie to Albany was awarded in late 2020 with three more sections awarded since then.
The remaining project — the one receiving the $40 million boost — includes the City of Doerun, where the highway will split into two one-way pairs through town.
Preliminary engineering for that project was in Program Year 2018 and right-of-way acquisition in Program Year 2023, according to information on the GDOT website, dot.ga.gov. Utilities and construction are expected to begin in Program Year 2026. A program year begins July 1 of the preceding calendar year, so Program Year 2026 would be July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026.
It is not clear whether the projections on the GDOT website have been updated to include the advancement expected from the funding boost that was announced last week.
