LETTER TO THE EDITOR: My run-in with the Secret Service

The year 1976, my experience with federal presidential protectors. Nearing Plains, Georgia, I was stopped by them. I had a contract to dismantle two municipal water tanks in Leslie and Plains, with a 65 ton crane on site. Several vehicles were pulled over for inspection by the agents. After a few minutes I was in line for questioning, I however received an apology for being held up and was flagged on through.

Confused, I immediately assessed the moment as I drove away unchecked. You see, I was driving a 1975 Lincoln Continental car, with a five-foot telephone antenna screwed to the trunk, and the front seat was filled with telephone transmitting equipment. I began laughing. They assumed I was an agent.
