Colquitt boys shoot 310, finish third in Packer Invitational

MOULTRIE — Counting the scores of three freshmen and a sophomore, the Colquitt County boys golf team shot a 310 to finish third in the Packer Invitational held Saturday at Sunset Country Club.
Thomasville’s Brookwood School, which counted a 74 shot by Moultrie’s Austin Baker, finished first in the 30-team tournament with a 285.

Carrollton was second with a 290.
Region 1-7A’s Lowndes High was fourth, four shots back of the Packers at 314.
Colquitt was led by sophomore Michael Hall, who shot a 1-under 71.
The other three scores came from ninth-graders: a 79 by Reese Hood and 80s from Leighton Hood and Peyton Collins.
Freshman Jacob Rowell played No. 5 for the Packers and shot an 84.
The 310 was the second-lowest score the Packers have produced this season. They shot a 309 on March 11 in the Trojan Invitational at River Pointe Golf Club in Albany.

The Colquitt County B-team shot a 340 on Saturday and finished 14th.
For the B-team, senior James Fagan shot an 80; senior David Strange, an 83; junior Harrison Brown, an 88; and freshman Dawson Lane, an 89.
“Those five freshmen are going to be great,” Packers coach Andrew Eunice said. “Dawson and Jake included.
“And Michael is just really dang good!”
Eunice also sent kudos out to Fagan.
“Super proud of James, too,” Eunice said. “He’s been playing better and better lately. That was the lowest score he’s shot in a tournament and he’s only been playing a couple years.”
The rest of the Packer Invitational’s top-10 includes North Paulding, fifth, with a 316; Pierce County, sixth, 319; Calvary Christian, seventh, 320; Harris County, eighth, 323; Lowndes 2, ninth, 325; and Smiths Station (Ala.) 326.
The Packers will compete next on Monday, April 8, in the Douglas Invitational at Douglas Country Club.
That will be the team’s final competition before the GHSA’s Area 1 tournament, which will be held April 15, at Sunset Country Club.
Colquitt County, Camden County, Campbell, Carrollton, East Coweta, Lowndes, Richmond Hill, Valdosta and Westlake will participate.
The Area champion and runner-up will receive an automatic bid to the State Championships.
The third- and fourth-place teams will advance to a Sectional that will be held Monday, May 6, also at Sunset Country Club.
The 36-hole Class 7A state championship will be held on Monday, May 20, at Sunset Hills Country Club in Carrollton.
