Diamond Packers drop series opener at Valdosta 3-1

MOULTRIE – Colquitt County managed just one hit and dropped the opening game of its Region 1-7A series 3-1 on Tuesday at Valdosta.

The Packers only hit and only run came on a one-out home run by freshman Bowen DeRosso in the second inning.

Colquitt was otherwise frustrated by Valdosta senior right-hander Skyler Howell, who walked three and struck out four.

Packers starter Cam Cook worked six innings and gave up three runs, including two in the bottom of the first.

He allowed six hits to the Wildcats and struck out three.

Jaxon Chambers pitched a scoreless sixth inning.

The loss is the fourth in a row for the Packers who fall to 10-11 overall and drop to last place in the region at 2-5.

Valdosta evened its region record at 2-2 and its overall record at 8-8.

The two are scheduled to meet in a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Ike Aultman Field at Jerry Croft Stadium.

Also on Tuesday, Richmond Hill defeated Camden County 5-4 and joins Valdosta in second place in the region with its 2-2 record.

Camden County falls to 3-4 in the region.

Lowndes, which leads the region with a 5-1 record,  does not play a region series this week.

The Vikings, ranked No. 2 in Class 7A, are 16-5 overall.
