VALDOSTA — VocalFlo, LLC will host the 2nd Annual South Georgia Gospel Music Festival on June 8 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Unity Park in Downtown Valdosta in honor of Black Music Month.
The United States has been celebrating African-American Music Appreciation Month, also known as Black Music Month, in June since 1979. The month of June is set aside to appreciate the contributions of African-American musicians, composers, singers, and songwriters in American culture. The month honors the history and rich African traditions that gave birth to different styles of music such as rap, hip-hop, jazz, rhythm and blues, barbershop, and swing. Gospel music, or sacred music, has had great influence in all genres of music, which is why it is the chosen genre to celebrate for the month.
This year’s featured non-profit is The South Street Community Care House. The South Street Community Care House initiatives began on Jan. 25, 2010, under the leadership and guidance of Sandra J. Tooley.
Their objectives are:
1. to provide educational support for children and the elderly.
2. to provide health and nutrition for children, the elderly and the needy.
3. to provide support for youth and the needy.
4. to provide information regarding development opportunities for the community.
5. to promote pride and improve relationships in the community.
The Community Care House’s motto is “help one, help another, help us all help ourselves.” All donations collected and a percentage of all proceeds will go to The South Street Community Care House to help revitalize their facility and aid in the continued efforts to provide meals and education to the community.
Attendees will experience performances by local church choirs, groups, soloists and musicians. This event is free and open to the public. Lawn chairs and blankets are highly recommended. Organizers are still looking for performers, food trucks, vendors and sponsors. There are also opportunities for volunteers to help with the day’s activities.
