Packers score run in seventh to defeat Hillgrove 3-2

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County scored the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice in the top of the seventh inning and held on to defeat Hillgrove 3-2 on Friday in Cobb County.

The victory is the third in a row for the Packers, who raised their record to 7-4.

The Packers got outstanding pitching from Bowen DeRosso and Cook Tompkins, who combined to allow just one earned run and two hits over seven innings.

DeRosso, the freshman right-hander, went the first four innings, giving up two hits and both runs, although only one was earned. He walked three and struck out seven.

Tompkins threw the final three innings without allowing a run or a hit. He fanned five Hawks.

Tompkins’s effort ran his streak of hitless innings pitched to seven in a row. Over those seven innings, he has struck out 11 batters.

The junior left-hander started against Lee County on Tuesday and did not give up a hit in his four innings on the mound.

Colquitt jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Mason Moore’s second home run of the season.

The Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the first with an unearned run that scored on a sacrifice fly by Tanner Greenwald.

The Packers went up 2-1 in the top of the third inning.

With two out, Moore was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a single by Cam Cook.

After Jaxon Chambers walked to load the bases, Adam Beverly singled to left to drive in Moore.

The Hawks tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a double by Jordan Walker.

The game remain knotted until the top of the seventh.

Hembree opened the inning with a single to left and Davis Lightsey, sent in as the courtesy runner, stole second.

Lightsey went to third when Bryce Roberts reached on an error.

Moore grounded to shortstop Donovan Dortch, who threw to second to force Roberts as Lightsey scored the run to put the Packers up 3-2.

Tompkins, who got the win, struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh before issuing a walk.

He then got Avery Wilson to pop out to first baseman Jake Walker to end the game.

The Packers had five hits, including two by Beverly.

Moore, Cook and Hembree had the others.

Hilllgrove, coming off a 25-13 season, falls to 3-5.
