MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County girls basketball team might best be advised not to dwell too long on its last meeting with Campbell High.

The Lady Packers, who will travel to Smyrna for a 6 p.m. Saturday second-round state playoff game against the Lady Spartans, made that same trip in the first round last year.

It was not a trip to remember: Campbell 67, Colquitt County 35.

But if the Lady Packers play as they did in Tuesday’s 50-43 first-round state playoff win over Archer, they could have a chance of avenging last year’s first-round loss.

Still, Campbell, the Region 2 champion and ranked No. 8 in Class 7A, is coming off a 68-45 first-round win over Marietta that raised its record to 21-7.

The Spartans are led by senior Brooke Suttle, who averages 16.2 points and 7.5 rebounds a game.

But the Lady Packers, ranked No. 9 in Class 7A, are coming off a confidence-building victory over Archer on the William Bryant Court that raised their record to 23-5.

Colquitt trailed 34-32 when the Lady Tigers scored on a layup in the first few seconds of the final quarter.

But Jamya Moore answered 30 seconds later with a long 3-pointer to put Colquitt up 35-34 and the Lady Packers never trailed again, outscoring the visitors 18-11 in the fourth quarter.

In the final eight minutes, six Lady Packers scored, with D’Zeriyah Polite leading the way with four points.

For the game, Colquitt had three players in double-digits, led by Amareyia Knighton’s 12 points. Moore added 11 and Polite had 10.

Moore also led the Colquitt on the boards with nine rebounds.

The Lady Packers were able to win despite leading scorer Amira Walters-Smith being held to eight points. She averages 17.2 a game.

Nyleigha Knighton added six points and Ameris Johnson had three, all in the fourth quarter.

Not only would a victory over Campbell send Colquitt to a berth in the Elite Eight, it also would give the Lady Packers their 24th win, tying them for the most in school history.

The 1983-1984 Lady Packers went 24-3.

The Colquitt County-Campbell winner will play the winner of the game between Cherokee and Lambert in the third round.

Colquitt was one of two Region 1 girls teams to advance in the first round.

Region champion Lowndes defeated Brookwood 52-42 and will play host to No. 3-ranked Carrollton in Round 2.

No. 3 Camden County was eliminated by Newton 50-43 and Richmond Hill fell to top-ranked Grayson 74-50.

The Colquitt County boys dropped their state tournament opener to No. 1-ranked Grayson, falling 88-44.

The Packers finish the season 6-23.

Valdosta was the only Region 1 boys team to survive the first round.

The Wildcats, the No. 2 team from Region 1, beat Brookwood 59-50 and will play the Campbell boys this weekend.

Region 1 champion Camden County was eliminated by Archer 53-46.

Lowndes, the No. 3 team from Region 1, was ousted by Newton 74-40.
