Williams, Walters-Smith lead Lady Packers named to All-Region team

Averaging 17.2 points a game, Colquitt County’s Amira Walters-Smith was named the Region 1-7A girls Offensive Player of the Year.

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County’s Rondesha Williams was named the Coach of the Year and Amira Walters-Smith was selected the Offensive Player of the Year on the 2023-2024 All-Region 1-7A girls basketball team.

Williams, in her 17th season as the Lady Packers coach, led her team to a 22-5 record and a berth in the region tournament finals.

She and the Lady Packers will play host to Archer High of Lawrenceville in the first round of the state tournament on Tuesday.

Williams got her 300th career victory when the Lady Packers defeated Brooks County in the final regular-season game.

Walters-Smith, Colquitt County’s junior shooting guard, is averaging 17.2 points a game as a junior this season.

Camden County’s Taylor Rietveld was named the Player of the Year while averaging 14.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game for the Lady Wildcats.

Rietveld’s Camden County teammate Mmekom Inyang received the Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Colquitt County’s Amareyia Knighton and Amaris Johnson were named to the All-Region first team.

Knighton, a junior, is averaging 13.8 points and 5.2 rebounds for the Lady Packers.

Johnson, a junior, is Colqluitt County’s leading rebounder, pulling down 5.6 boards a game.

Lady Packer seniors Jamya Moore and D’Zeriyah Polite were named to the second team and freshman Nacardia Robinson and senior Nyleigha Knighton received honorable mention.

Also named to the first team were Akeelah Bryan and Mahliya Reeder of Camden County; Makiyah Matthews and Jada Brown of Richmond Hill; Nadia Gardner and Chastity Degale of Valdosta; and Kaci Demps and Aryana Thomas of Lowndes.

The other second-team selections were J’Mya Albertie and Kaniyah Patterson of Camden County; Cullen McCormick and Emari Brown of Richmond Hill; JaMya Evans and Lauren Bloom of Valdosta; and Kayla Jackson and Kimora Wade of Lowndes.

Others receiving honorable mention were Zahari Gardner and Summer Eberhart of Valdosta; Shamiaha Webb and Laila Foster of Lowndes; Leanna Oge and Ariyana Canady of Richmond Hill; and Dasmine Cooper and Heaven Whitlock of Camden County.
