MOULTRIE – Colquitt County baseball coach Brandon Brock termed his team’s two-day venture to Columbus and Hamilton (with all due respect to Darrell Strange) “The Ride of the Golden Herd.”
After opening the season by being shut out at home by Thomas County Central, the Packers strode into Columbus on Friday and took a satisfying 3-0 win over the Blue Devils.
And in a rare appearance at the home of the Harris County Tigers on Saturday, the Packers bludgeoned their way to a 16-1 win in the first game of a doubleheader and then scored twice in the top of the seventh of the nightcap to get the sweep 5-4.
Brock’s assessment of his team’s northwest foray: “Best product of the 3-0 weekend road trip … self-confidence increased and synergy was created.”
Those elements got a quick boost in Game 1 when Colquitt led 4-0 before the Tigers were able to record an out.
Colquitt scored in each of the five innings in the run rule-shortened game.
The Packers were leading 7-0 after three innings when they added seven more in the top of the fourth, with Mason Moore contributing a two-run single.
They pounded out 16 hits, including their first home run of the season courtesy of Moore, a solo shot in the third inning.
Moore and freshman Bryce Roberts, who moved into the leadoff spot in the lineup, each had three hits.
Cam Cook, Tyson Hobby and Jake Walker each had a pair.
Adam Beverly chipped in a double and Jaxon Chambers, Brady DeRosso and Hayden Hembree added singles.
Moore and Chambers each drove in three runs; Hobby knocked in a pair.
Roberts, Cook, Beverly, DeRosso and Hembree each had one RBI.
The Packers shelled each of the four Harris County pitchers.
Given a four-run, first-inning cushion, Packers starter Garron Wingate cruised through four innings, giving up three hits and one run. He issued one base on balls and struck out two.
Cole Holder pitched the fifth and faced just three batters, striking out two of them, to close out the win.
It was the second-straight impressive pitching performance for the Packers.
Gabe Eubanks and Logan Plymel had limited Columbus to no runs and two hits over seven innings the night before.
The Packers jumped out quickly in the nightcap on Saturday as well.
In the first inning, Cayden Parker reached on a bunt single and sped home on a Cook double.
Hobby followed with an RBI single to put the Packers up 2-0.
Hembree, the Packers catcher, singled in the second and his courtesy runner eventually scored on a Tigers error.
But Harris County finally stirred in the bottom of the second, scoring three times off Colquitt County starter Cook Tompkins to tie the game.
Freshman Bowen DeRosso made his first appearance on the mound for the Packers in the bottom of the third and went the rest of the way, giving up one run and four hits while striking out seven.
The Tigers broke the 3-3 tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Packers came back.
In the top of the seventh, Moore and Hembree drew walks to open the inning.
Roberts got a bunt single – his fourth hit of the day – to load the bases.
Moore scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and Cook put the Packers back in the lead with a sacrifice fly.
Down 5-4, the Tigers did not go quietly in the bottom of the seventh, with the Dejon Elder reaching on an infield hit and TJ Franks beating out a bunt single to open the inning.
Hudson King’s sacrifice moved the runners to second and third.
The Packers intentionally walked Hudson Clark to load the bases and set up a possible game-ending double play.
But DeRosso got a big strikeout of Luke McEldoon and then induced Ashton Herring to ground out to first baseman Jake Walker to end the game.
The Packers had seven hits in Game 2, including two more by Cook, who was 4-for-8 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs in the two games.
Roberts, Parker, Hobby, Walker and Hembree had the others.
Roberts, batting leadoff in both games, was 4-for-9 with an RBI while playing both second and third base.
Colquitt will put its three-game winning streak on the line when they travel to Douglas on Tuesday to face Coffee High at 6 p.m.
The Trojans are 3-0 after defeating Bacon County 9-1, Toombs County 4-2 and Vidalia 9-1.
The Packers will then be back on Ike Aultman Field at Jerry Croft Stadium for three straight games beginning with a 6 p.m. Wednesday game against Cairo.
As part of the annual Georgia/Florida Challenge, the Packers will play host to Creekside High of St. Johns, Fla., at 6:30 p.m. Friday and face St. John Neumann of Naples, Fla., at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
