Colquitt tunes up for Packer Classic with fifth-place finish in CFK Invitational

MOULTRIE — Ja’Quavian “Turk” Daniels won all four of his matches to lead the Colquitt County wrestling team to a fifth-place finish on Saturday in the CFK Invitational at Jefferson High School.
The invitational drew 26 teams from Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Florida.
The host Jefferson Dragons scored 194 points to win on their home mats.
Alabama’s Hewitt-Trussville was second with 169 points.
Colquitt had 136 points.
Region 1-7A’s Valdosta tied for 12th with 87 points.
Tift County, which will rejoin the region next year, was 21st with 64 points.
The event was the last before Colquitt plays host to the annual Packer Classic on Jan. 5-6 on the William Bryant Court at the high school.
Daniels, a senior who was the Class 7A state runner-up at 285 last season, won his weight class at Jefferson while raising his season’s record to 26-3.
After a first-round bye, Daniels pinned Lassiter’s Silas Armour and Jackson County’s Alonso Ortiz to reach the semifinal, where he pinned North Gwinnett’s Aiden de Wet.
In the first-place match, Daniels took a 9-1 major decision over Hewitt-Trussville’s Zack Chatman.
Packers coach Benjy Scarbor said that Daniels is having a “fantastic season so far, getting lots of different competition.
“He is willing to fix mistakes and has been a joy to coach.”
Junior Russell Flowers went 5-2 and turned in a third-place finish at 157.
Flowers opened with a pin of Yulee’s Rex Graff, a 16-0 technical fall over Jefferson’s Evan Huggins and a 7-1 decision over Valdosta’s Kaiden Richardson.
In the semifinal, Flowers dropped a 15-5 major decision to Greenbrier’s Sebastian Melendez.
But he regrouped and took a sudden victory over Tuscaloosa County’s Airen McCoy in the consolation semifinal and earned a 5-1 decision over Jackson County’s Daylan Maxwell in the third-place match.
Flowers is now 22-5 this season.
Matthew Dillon went 3-2 and finished fourth at 215.
Billy Lawton, at 138, and Cruz Grijalva, at 120, also went 5-2 and took fifth-place finishes.
Lawton is now 23-13.
Also for the Packers, Eric Henson went 3-2 at 132 and is now 21-13; Trenton Dunbar went 2-2 at 165; Rafael King went 2-2 at 190; Luis Garcia went 2-2 at 106; and Britton Marshall went 2-2 at 126.
The Packer Classic will open at 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, with junior varsity and girls competition.
A double-elimination or round-robin format will be used for the girls and junior varsity competitions, based on the number of entries.
Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each weight class.
The following day, varsity duals will begin at 9 a.m.
Teams from Colquitt County, Tift County, Lee County, Thomas County Central, Ware County, Cook, Cairo, Lowndes, Veterans, Valdosta, Jones County, Berrien, Coffee, Northside-Warner Robins, Crisp County, Lincoln (Fla.) and Chiles (Fla.) will be in the field.
The top three teams in the varsity competition will receive trophies.
