MOULTRIE — Last Thursday, Dec. 7,, Jaina Turner became the second volleyball player in Colquitt County High School history to continue her career at the collegiate level via scholarship.
“She is extremely deserving of this opportunity she has earned,” said CCHS head coach Jess Patel. “And, she did earn this by working her butt off.”
The 6-foot-3 inch athlete will be attending Middle Georgia State University for the 2024 season as a Knight.
“Let me tell you what you are getting into,” said Patel with a laugh as she addressed the coaches from MGS, who attended the signing. “Jaina is a rock on and off the court, both mentally and physically. She is the calm during the storm and handles her business.”
Though she is primarily a front row player, Jaina also plays the middle back position as a defender.
“She has played many positions for us,” said Patel. “This year she didn’t play her ideal position, but she still went out there and got things done. She was terrifying as a blocker and had so many kills.”
According to MaxPreps, in the 40 sets Turner played her senior year she had 43 kills, 20 blocks, 14 digs and 2 ace serves.
“She works extremely hard and never complains,” said Patel. “Whatever is asked of her she will do, and she does it with a smile on her face.”
In fact, Turner remains focused no matter what a match throws at her.
“I still believe Jaina doesn’t get shaken on the court,” said Patel. “She is an amazing teammate, always having the team’s back and keeping the energy positive. She is always thinking of that next play.”
It isn’t just on the court where Turner is successful.
“There is a reason they are called student-athletes,” said Patel. “Jaina excels in the classroom. I’ve never once had to reach out to her teachers or ask her what’s going on academically. I know she’s got it taken care of.”
There were several tearful eyes as Jaina signed the paperwork that is propelling her journey forward.
“I am so proud of Jaina,” said Patel. “I can’t wait to see what you do in the next phase of your life, and I’m excited to come watch you play.”
