Colquitt girls basketball team opens with three straight wins

MOULTRIE — With juniors Amareyia Knighton and Amira Walters-Smith leading the way offensively, the Colquitt County girls basketball team has started the 2023-2024 season with three straight victories, none of which have come on the William Bryant Court.
After defeating Westover 43-30 in Albany on Saturday, Nov. 18, the Lady Packers traveled to Jacksonville, Fla., and swept both of their games there on Monday and Tuesday.
Knighton, beginning her third season as a starter, led the Lady Packers with 15 points in the win over Westover.
In the two games in the Insider Exposure Thanksgiving Classic at Bolles School in Jacksonville, Walters-Smith, in her first varsity season with the Lady Packers, was the leading scorer each game.
The Lady Packers outscored Spanish River of Boca Raton, Fla., 25-0 in the first quarter and cruised to a 56-11 victory on Monday.
Colquitt held the Sharks scoreless in the first and third quarters.
Walters-Smith had 14 points and Knighton added 13 in the lopsided victory.
Jamya Moore had eight; Caylnn Singletary, seven; Nyleigha Knighton, five; freshman Nacardia Robinson had the first four points of her varsity career; and Dalivia McBride had two.
The game against Deltona (Fla.) on Tuesday was much closer, with Colquitt hanging on for a 37-34 win.
The Lady Packers led 12-9 after the first quarter and 22-11 at the half, but were outscored 23-15 in the final two quarters.
Again, Walters-Smith, with 13, and Amareyia Knighton, with 10, were in double-figures for the Lady Packers.
Nyleigha Knighton had seven; D’Zeriyah Polite, three; and Robinson, two.
After the first three games, Amareyia Knighton is averaging 12.7 points per game; Walters-Smith, 12.3.
The Lady Packers will be off until Friday, Dec. 8, when they join the Colquitt County boys team in traveling to Cairo for another set of non-Region 1-7A games.
The Colquitt County boys also opened their season on Nov. 18, falling to Westover 59-30.
Sophomore Cason Harden hit two 3-pointers and was five-for-six from the free throw en route to leading the Packers with 13 points. Quan Kinsey added six; Jae Lamar had three; and Zy Alridge, Jashar Kinsey, Gabe Robinson and Alexis Barge each had two points.
