MOULTRIE — After having her full team together for just a week of practice, Colquitt County girls basketball coach Rondesha Williams was pleased to get a 43-30 season-opening victory at Westover on Saturday.

The Colquitt County boys team, awaiting key players currently with the Packers 12-0 football team, fell to the Patriots 59-30.

After Saturday’s game was tied 8-8 after the first quarter, Colquitt County’s Amareyia Knighton hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter and the Lady Packers were off and running, outscoring the Lady Patriots 35-17 over the final three quarters.

Knighton went on to lead the Colquitt girls with 15 points.

Amira Walters-Smith also was in double-digits with 10 and Jamya Moore added nine.

Ameris Johnson was 5-for-6 from the free-throw line and Nyleigha Knighton and Caylnn Singletary each had one basket.

Seven members of the Colquitt County girls basketball team — the Knighton sisters, Moore, Singletary, Ta’Meria Williams, Dalivia McBride and D’Zeriyah Polite — also play for the undefeated Lady Packer flag football team.

Also on the girls roster this season are Jermani Triplett and freshmen Kamya Thomas and Nacardia Robinson.

“Considering we only had a full week of practice with the entire team, I saw some good things,” said Williams, starting her 17th season as the Lady Packers head coach.

“The girls understand we are not in shape due to flag football and they are working hard to get in basketball shape. We are going to keep working hard and earn it!”

The Colquitt girls will play Monday and Tuesday in the Insider Exposure Thanksgiving Classic in Jacksonville, Fla.

The event has drawn some 100 teams.

The Lady Packers will meet Spanish River High School of Boca Raton, Fla., at 2:15 Monday in their first game.

The Colquitt girls will face Deltona High at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Both games will be played at Bolles School.

After the two games in Jacksonville, the Lady Packers will play next on Dec. 8, at Cairo.

After the season-opening win at Westover, Williams has a career record of 280-148 at Colquitt County.
