TIFTON — The students and staff of Heritage Academy recently made a field trip to ABAC’s Georgia Museum of Agriculture (formerly known as the Agrirama) in Tifton.
This was an educational hands-on experience, the school said in a press release. The boys and girls were broken up into separate groups, and each visited specific sites around the campus representing important areas of rural 19th century life in Georgia.
The students also were able to dress partly in authentic garb, with the boys wearing suspenders and the girls in ankle-length skirts.
Among the campus, which houses several authentic period cabins, barns, workshops, and other structures, the students were given informative talks at the Tift House, Doctor’s Office, and the Schoolhouse.
They were also invited to participate in hands-on demonstrations at the Feed and Seed, Grist Mill, and the Gibbs house, where they enjoyed a lunch which was prepared on a wood powered stove.
After lunch, the students were instructed in light chores, and they washed and put away their dishes.
Perhaps the most popular location was the old-fashioned Drug Store, where they could order ice cream, soft drinks, and candy.
“The location staff were both knowledgeable and friendly,” the press release said, “and the trip was enjoyed by all.”
