Edwards making plays for undefeated Bulldogs

MOULTRIE — Former Packer Daijun Edwards continues to make big plays for the undefeated University of Georgia football team.
The senior running back scored two touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ come-from-behind 27-20 victory last Saturday at Auburn.

After missing Georgia’s first two games because of a knee injury, Edwards has started the last three games and has carried 51 times for a team-leading 260 yards and five touchdowns.
Edwards, who is Colquitt County’s all-time leading rusher, also has one pass reception for six yards.
The Bulldogs, 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the SEC, will be back at Sanford Stadium on Saturday to take on Kentucky, also 5-0 and 2-0.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN.

• Former Packer and Florida State Seminole Cameron Erving has recently signed with the New Orleans Saints.

An offensive lineman, Erving was a free agent after being released by the Carolina Panthers on August 29.
Erving was a first-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2015 draft, the 19th overall selection.
He was a member of the Kansas City Chiefs and earned a Super Bowl Champoinship ring when the Chiefs won Super Bowl LIV. He also played for the Dallas Cowboys in 2020 before joining the Panthers.
• And speaking of the National Football League, Minnesota Vikings rookie, and former Packer, Jay Ward was credited with his first professional tackle when the Vikings defeated Carolina 21-13 on Sunday.
The Vikings had started the season 0-3.
Ward, a defensive back, and Edwards were members of the 2018 Colquitt County football team that went 14-1.
• And Jay’s younger brother Jaheim Ward was credited with three solo tackles, a pass breakup and a blocked kick in Austin Peay’s 52-10 victory over Linnenwood.
The Governors, now 3-2, will be off this Saturday and will be back in action on Oct. 14 when they travel to Boiling Springs, N.C., to meet Gardner-Webb, which features Jaheim’s former Colquitt County High teammate defensive end Ty French. Jaheim and Ty were teammates on the 2019 Packers.
• Former Colquitt County head coach Justin Rogers has led his second Thomas County Central football team to a 6-0 overall record and a 1-0 Region 1-6A record after a region-opening 52-0 victory over Veterans.
The Yellow Jackets are averaging 46.5 points while giving up just 7.8 in their first six games.
TCC, which is 18-1 under Rogers, will be home to face Tift County on Friday.
The Blue Devils are 1-5 overall and 0-1 in Region 1-6A after a 35-34 overtime loss to Northside-Warner Robins last Friday.
Tift County head football coach Noel Dean has already announced that he will resign at the end of this season, his third leading the Blue Devils.
Tift is 8-19 under his direction.
• Thomas University’s first-year football team lost to Keiser University 44-12 in West Palm Beach, Fla., last Saturday, but three former Packers performed well for the Nighthawks.
Cole Holmes started at left guard; Julian Harper started at outside linebacker and had one solo and three assisted tackles; and cornerback Raheim McBride came off the bench to supply two solo and two assisted tackles.
On Saturday, the 0-3 Nighthawks will be at Veterans Stadium in Thomasville at noon to play host to 2-2 Ave Maria University.
• Georgia Tech gave up 38-unanswered points and lost to Bowling Green 38-27 last Saturday in a game in which cornerback Omar Daniels was credited with two solo tackles.
The Jackets will travel to play at Miami on Saturday.
• Orion Bonner had four pass receptions for 34 yards in Glenville (W.Va.) State’s loss to the University of Charleston.
The Pioneers will play at West Liberty on Saturday.
Bonner leads Glenville State with 19 catches for 237 yards and two touchdowns.
• Lemeke Brockington started at wide receiver, but did not have a catch in the University of Minnesota’s 35-24 win over Louisiana last Saturday.
The Golden Gophers will play host to No. 2 Michigan on Saturday in a game to be televised at 7:30 p.m. on NBC.
