Hurst completes FROG Week at UNG

DAHLONEGA — Dayton Hurst, of Coolidge, was one of 178 cadets who began their time as University of North Georgia (UNG) cadets with Freshman Recruit Orientation Group (FROG) Week from Aug. 13-19.

FROG Week, which is held before the beginning of the fall and spring semesters at UNG, marks the transition from civilians to cadets for these incoming freshmen.

Cadet leaders plan and execute all corps events, including FROG Week, with the oversight of the commandant staff.

UNG is one of six senior military colleges in the nation and commissions more than 100 officers into the Army, Army National Guard and Army Reserve each year.

Wiregrass announces recent graduates

VALDOSTA — Wiregrass Georgia Technical College held the Spring and Summer 2023 Commencement Exercises on Thursday, July 13. The ceremony honored both Spring and Summer Semester graduates. There were 1,011 students who were awarded their associate degree, diploma, or technical certificate of credit, 115 students who were awarded High School Equivalency, and 302 Dual Enrollment or high school students earning a college degree, diploma, or Technical Certificate of Credit. Among those graduating, the college awarded 175 associate degrees, 173 diplomas, and 1,124 technical certificates. The commencement ceremony was held at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus Conference Center.

The commencement speaker was Welding Technology graduate Silo Keith. She was the college’s first female welder to compete at the State SkillsUSA competition and earned a bronze medal. Her career plans are to work as a traveling welder for several years and then open her own welding shop and create home décor, and ornamental metal projects like gates, and staircases.

Colquitt County graduates included:

Spring 2023: Victor Angel, Gwenda Hendrick, Henry Ibarra, Ramsey Merritt, Kaylin Peterson, Gary Rich, and Justin Slocumb.

Summer 2023: Destiny Kirkland, Aidan Mclean, Leticia Simon, and Jennifer Smith.
