MOULTRIE — Down 8-5 with just six outs left, the Colquitt County softball team was staring at a possible Senior Night loss to Berrien on Monday at Packer Park.

But the Lady Packers got three runs in the bottom of sixth — including the tying run on a two-out solo homer by catcher Lanie Burley — and the game-winner on an infield grounder in the seventh.

The 9-8 win raised the Colquitt girls’ record to 14-9 as they head into a much-needed break before the Oct. 3, Region 1-7A home game against Richmond Hill.

The win helped the team honor its three seniors: Maris Hopper, Carli Pearson, the injured Kaden Sutton and manager Jayden Sullivan.

Sutton was in the starting lineup, but was taken out after one pitch. She was spiked in a play at third base in the second game of last Thursday’s doubleheader and needed eight stitches to close the wound.

She could be ready to return to the lineup for the series against Richmond Hill.

The other two seniors played key roles in the comeback win over the Rebelettes, who took a 6-10 record into the game, including a 4-0 loss to the Lady Packers on Aug. 17, in Nashville.

Hopper was 4-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in, including the first RBI in the three-run top of the sixth.

Her four hits raised her batting average to .493 and she now has 23 RBIs. Both lead the team.

Pearson started the sixth-inning rally with a base hit. But she also contributed two outstanding defensive plays at shortstop, leaving her feet to field ground balls by Callie Nix in the second inning and Bella Shealey in the sixth and throw both runners out at first.

Pearson scored two runs and shares the team lead in that category with Hopper.

All three seniors were key parts of the Colquitt County teams that went a combined 50-10 the last two seasons.

“I’m really proud of what they’ve done for us,” Lady Packers coach Chance Pitts said. “I’m going to hate to lose them. They are going to be hard to replace.”

Colquitt plated two runs in the bottom of the first, with one scoring an error and the other on a single by Rhylee Tillery.

But Berrien sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring six runs.

Three of the runs scored on a home run by Abi Gardner and two other rode home on a double by Lathan Tucker.

Down 6-2, the Lady Packers got two of the runs back in the bottom of the second with Hopper singling in Peyton Arrington and Hopper herself scoring on Tillery’s second-straight base hit.

After the first two Berrien batters reached in the top of the third, Colquitt County starter Kamri Paulk was lifted in favor of Lilah Thompson.

The freshman right-hander gave up a sacrifice fly to the first batter she faced, but allowed only one run and one hit the rest of the way.

Colquitt got a run on a sacrifice fly by Arrington in the bottom of the third to cut the Berrien lead to 7-5.

The Rebelettes extended their lead to 8-5 on a two-out single by Presley Wade in the top of the sixth.

It was the only run and hit that Thompson allowed in her five innings in the circle.

The Lady Packers then went to work in the bottom of the sixth.

Pearson singled to left on the first pitch, stole second and went to third when the catcher’s throw sailed into center field. Hopper singled her home and scored herself on Rheygan Harrell’s ground out.

Burley then tied the game with her home run to left field, the first of her career.

After Thompson retired the Rebelettes in order in the top of the seventh, she led off the bottom of the inning by reaching on an error.

Gracie McKellar ran for her and went all the way to third on a perfect bunt by Arrington. RaJayla McBride then grounded to second baseman Callie Nix, but her throw to the plate was late as McKellar slid in with the winning run.
