Colquitt County Lady Packers varsity teams keeps match within 2-point margin

MOULTRIE — Though they fell short of a victory, the Lady Packer varsity volleyball team ended each set with only a two-point margin against the Lowndes Vikettes on Thursday when they faced them at Colquitt County High School.

After losing the match 3-0, the varsity team is 9-3 overall and 0-2 in region play.

The JV Lady Packer team also lost their match 2-0, with set scores 25-19, 26-24.

Four players were able to serve aces during the JV match: Jaida Gachuz, Dimaree Smith, Nora Avera and Madison Lane.

The longest serving streak was from Smith, who served the final five points for the Lady Packers during the second set.

Twice during their match, JV players Smith and Taraji Green had successful blocks to shut down the Wildcats while Carli Brown, Sadie Saunders and Avera all had third touches to get an immediate point for the Lady Packers.

During the second set, Gachuz had a phenomenal dive from a rogue bump that went into the net, sending it straight up for a perfectly lined up spike.

The varsity match saw similar plays while they faced their battle.

Utilizing the pancake, Nyasia Harper kept the ball alive during the first set, which resulted in Olivia Davis setting up Kate Summerlin for the kill.

That play tied the match at 15, and the Lady Packers held their advantage until the Wildcats tied the score again at 23 and then overtook Colquitt County to win the first set 26-24.

The remaining set scores were 25-23, 28-26.

Other Lady Packers who sacrificed themselves to the gymnasium floor to stop play from going dead were Eunice, Davis and Clara Newton.

Throughout the match, Reese Webb, Wynn Kinsey and Jessie Eunice all served aces with Webb, with five ace serves total, had a run of four aces during a serving streak early in the second set.

Webb continued to dominate the court when she both found opportunities to tip the ball over to an unguarded spot and blocked spike attempts from the Wildcats.

Also having successful blocks during the match were Kinsey, Harper, Eunice and Jaina Turner.

Kinsey, Summerlin, Harper Eunice, Turner and Newton were all successful in sending the ball over the net unreturned.

The JV and varsity Lady Packer volleyball teams were to face Camden County at Colquitt County High School Sept. 12, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
