MOULTRIE – The 9th grade and JV Colquitt County high school Lady Packer softball teams swept Tift County during Monday night’s games at Packer Park.
The 9th grade team won 3-0, and the JV team won 2-1.
Playing first was the 9th grade team.
The Lady Packers had a tight defense during the entire game; in fact, only three Blue Devils successfully made it on base.
Pitcher Peyton Arrington strikes out five different batters throughout the game.
There were also five successful throws to first baseman Anna Lynn Armstrong resulting in outs. Gracie McKeller, Hannah Luckey and Arrington all completed one throw while Taylor Hewett completed two.
McKeller also caught a pop fly during the 5th inning.
The offense of the Lady Packers was just as strong.
During the second inning Hewett scored the first run for the Lady Packers after Luckey successfully sent the ball to the outfield.
Hewett’s journey around the bases began by being hit by the pitch, followed with two stolen bases. {/span}
The final two points were both scored during the third inning. Bryleigh Webb’s hit allowed Armstrong to complete a run while Hewett was the batter who allowed Rhylee Tillery to dash across home plate.
When the JV team hit the field, which consisted of many of the same players as the 9th grade team, they had to work a little harder for their victory as both teams continued to shut down the other’s offense.
Arrington, who pitched this game as well, strikes out five batters, making that 10 total for both games.
Even when the Blue Giants managed to get on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, the Lady Packers made them inch base by base to complete the run.
Directly following the Blue Devils successful run, Arrington strikes out three batters consecutively to shut down the loaded bases Tift County was holding.
The bottom of the 5th, and final inning, the Lady Packers were coming in with a disadvantage; however, they received the two runs needed within four batters.
After a quick first out, Tillery secured first base after a walk, and then turned around to steal second.
Madison Ford reached first base after an error by Blue Devils first baseman, who dropped the throw right as Ford hit the base.
With runners now on first and third, with only one out, Hewett went up to bat.
Hewett’s hit allowed both Tillery and Ford to successfully complete their runs, thus ending the game.
After their away game this coming Wednesday in Bainbridge, the next home match for the 9th grade and JV Lady Packer softball teams will be Saturday August 12th at Packer Park with the first pitch at 10 a.m.
