- Cais Cook got the final three outs for the Packers.
MOULTRIE – If Carlos Rey had any trouble with the chilly and blustery conditions at Ike Aultman Field and Jerry Croft Stadium on Saturday morning, it sure wasn’t apparent to the Colquitt County batters.
The Miami Springs left-hander adjusted well to weather that was not what he is accustomed to in South Florida, allowing two hits and striking out 11 Packers over six innings as the Golden Hawks blanked their hosts 2-0 in the Georgia-Florida Challenge.
Combined with the two Challenge losses on Friday, the Packers managed just one run in the three games on their home field in the Challenge and dropped to 2-8 on the season.
Rey breezed through his six innings of work, throwing just 80 pitches and facing just three batters over the limit. He went to three balls on only three batters and struck out all three.
The Packers hit just two balls to the left side, both ground balls to third. Colquitt never pushed a runner as far as third base against Rey.
In the seventh, the Packers had a chance to make a game of it against Brandon Villabril, who relieved Rey.
Henry Daniels led off the inning with a double to left, but Villabril struck out the next two batters before hitting Lucas Tostenson with a pitch to put the potential tying run aboard.
But Villabril got Hayden Moore to ground into a fielder’s choice to end the game.
Daniels’s hit was just the third by the Packers.
Moore reached on a one-out bunt in the third before Rey fanned the next two batters.
Cannon Whatley singled to right to open the fourth and quickly stole second. But Rey struck out the next three in a row.
Colquitt also had an opportunity in the sixth when Rey hit Pershaun Fann with a pitch with one out. But an infield grounder and Rey’s 11th and final strike out ended that threat as well.
Gavin Steptoe started for the Packers and while throwing 81 pitches to 16 batters, gave up just one run over three innings.
The junior left-hander walked three batters and the third one came around to score on an infield single by Yoansell Diaz in the second inning.
The wind likely helped Steptoe in the first inning when Miami Springs’ third baseman Jason Torrez appeared to hit a ball hard enough to clear the fence, only to have a potential three-run homer fall into the glove of Hayes Lightsey in deep left for the final out.
Jacob Walden relieved Steptoe in the fourth inning and immediately gave up a single to Lazko Hernandez, who came around to score an unearned run on an infield error.
After walking Diaz to open the seventh inning, Walden was replaced by Cais Cook, who promptly hit Jonathan Ricardo with a pitch.
But Cook retired the next three batters, striking out two.
The three Colquitt County pitchers combined to allow just two hits, one each by Steptoe and Walden.
The Packers will play again on Tuesday when Cairo visits. First pitch against the Syrupmakers, who defeated the Packers 8-3 on Feb. 10 in Cairo the season-opener, will be at 5 p.m.
Colquitt opens Region 1-7A play next Friday with a doubleheader at Lowndes. The first game will start at 5:30 p.m.
The 6-5 Vikings were 2-1 in the Georgia-Florida Challenge, defeating Miami Springs 13-9 and Coral Reef 7-4 on Friday before losing to Ponte Vedra 7-6 on Saturday.
