Branford man arrested for murder

BRANFORD, Fla. — A Branford man was arrested Friday in North Carolina for the murder of his grandfather earlier in the week.

According to the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office, investigators responded Tuesday morning to a residence in Curley’s Trailer Park regarding a deceased male, 77-year-old Wayne Curtis Manuel.

The SCSO investigation determined that Manuel was killed by his 33-year-old grandson Scottie Ray Manuel, of Branford.

Scottie Manuel was tracked to a location in North Carolina by SCSO investigators and the U.S. Marshals Service – Fugitive Task Force.

The U.S. Marshals Service, Hoke County (N.C.) Sheriff’s Office and SCSO investigators Wayne Kelly and Chris Lee arrested Manuel on a warrant Friday.

He is currently being held at the Hoke County Detention Center awaiting extradition back to Suwannee County.

On Saturday morning, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Dive Team attempted to locate the firearm used in the murder in the Suwannee River based upon information provided by the suspect.

Sheriff Sam St. John said the weapon has not yet been recovered but the dive team was continuing its search.

St. John thanked the District 2 Medical Examiners Office, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Florida Wildlife Commission, United States Marshals Service, Hoke County (N.C.) Sheriff’s Office, Fayetteville (N.C.) Police Department and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in resolving this case.
