Early voting ends; Election Day Tuesday in western Colquitt County

MOULTRIE, Ga. — As of about 10 a.m. Friday, the last day of early voting, 113 Colquitt Countians had cast ballots in the special election to fill the rest of the term of Rep. Jay Powell, who died in November.
Early voting for Powell’s District 171 seat began Jan. 6.

Eight of Colquitt County’s 19 precincts — all located on the west side of the county — are participating. Voters in those precincts who did not vote early or by absentee can cast their ballots 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at their regular polling places.
Chief Registrar Paula McCullough, who provided the Friday morning voter count, advised voters to remember to bring their photo IDs and to make sure that they go to vote in the right precinct.
Participating are:
• Bridge Creek, with voting at 2407 Bay Rocky Ford Road.
• Doerun, at Doerun Community Center, 212 W. Broad St., Doerun.
• Funston, at Funston City Hall, 115 W. Mulberry St., Funston.

• Hartsfield, at Hartsfield Public Library, 103 Bryan Road, Hartsfield.
• Mill Creek, at the Schley Baptist Church social hall, 231 Schley Church Road.
• Monk, at Monk Courthouse in the New Elm community, 5063 Ga. Highway 33 North.
• Thigpen, at Thigpen Courthouse, 6565 Thigpen Trail, Doerun.

District 171 also includes all of Mitchell County and part of Decatur County.
Three candidates are running for the seat: Tommy Akridge and Joe Campbell, both of Camilla, and Jewell Howard of Baconton. Although two are running as Republicans and one as a Democrat, voters will be asked to choose among the three at a single time.
If necessary a runoff will be held Feb. 25.
