MOULTRIE, Ga. — Abigail Kirkland of C.A. Gray Junior High School was crowned champion of the 2020 Colquitt County Schools District Spelling Bee on Friday.
Kirkland, 13, and thirteen other students representing the schools of Colquitt County participated in the annual spelling bee and took home commemorative pins for their efforts. Kirkland also took home a gold medal and the title of district champion after correctly spelling the final word, “colossal.”
“It feels weird,” said Kirkland at the reception. “I went to sleep at nine last night, but I glanced over the list one last time before bed. But I’m constantly reading books, so that helped a lot too.”
Kirkland cited her favorite book series as the “Harry Potter” series and the “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series, with her favorite book being “The Mark of Athena” by Rick Riordan.
Kirkland will represent Colquitt County at the regional spelling bee at 10 a.m. Feb. 22 at Jones Wheat Elementary, 1404 Shotwell Street, Bainbridge.
