MOULTRIE, Ga. — Colquitt County Commissioners agreed Tuesday to loan the Moultrie-Colquitt County Airport Authority $625,000 for upgrades at the Moultrie Municipal Airport.

The authority made a similar request to Moultrie City Council two weeks before. The council was unclear whether they were legally able to loan the money to the authority and instead voiced support for a restructuring of the authority that was also proposed.

“We have such aircrafts that we had to have a mandatory runway extension,” authority Chairman Mike Boyd told county commissioners. “We saved our money and managed well and were able to lengthen the runway to about 6,000 feet with a thousand foot overrun on what we will refer to as the north end. We lack a thousand foot overrun on the south end which will keep us as a Class 4 airport and allow these larger planes to land and keep everything in regulation.”

The Airport Authority hoped to split the cost down the middle and asked for loans from both the county and the city.

The county commissioners agreed to lend the authority the $625,000 after discussing a repayment plan over 7 years.
