Colquitt relay team qualifies for state swim meet

DOUGLAS – With just more than a month from the major meet of the season, Colquitt County High’s girls 200-yard medley relay team made the qualifying time needed for the GHSA championships. The Packers were swimming at the 17th annual Trojan Invitational hosted by Coffee County High Saturday, and the Lady Packer quartet came in second in the race at 2:05.87.

To make state in this event, a team must complete the swim in 2:07 or less.

Colquitt’s team consisted of Maggie Bishop (breaststroke), Madison Gonzales (freestyle), Caroline Harrell (backstroke), Allison Bell (butterfly).

Caroline Chapura swam with Gonzales, Harrell and Bell in the girls 200-yard freestyle relay and placed third in 1:54.73.

Emily Rigsby and Madison Edmondson swam with Chapura and Bishop for fifth place in the girls 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:36.

Richmond Hill High won the meet with a combined score of 164 points to 108 for host Coffee. Colquitt County placed sixth out of 10 teams.

Among other Packer swimmers to score were:

Emily Rigsby, third in girls 200-yard freestyle (2:28.49)

Case Gregory, second in boys 200-yard individual medley (2:22.08) and third in boys 100-yard backstroke (1:01.99)

Caroline Harrell, third in girls 100-yard backstroke (1:08.61)

Allison Bell, fifth in girls 50-yard freestyle (26.89) and sixth in girls 100-yard freestyle (1:00.58)

Some close calls include Case Gregory, Sam Shellhouse, Gage Edmondson and Luis Fernandez in the boys 400-yard relay. They were seventh, 1.44 seconds from sixth.

Maggie Bishop was 0.13 seconds out of sixth place in the girls 100-yard breaststroke (1:23.32).

Madison Gonzales placed ninth in the girls 50-yard freestyle but was less than a second from sixth behind two swimmers from Camden County. She was also ninth in the girls 100-yard freestyle, again less than a second from sixth place as were two swimmers from Richmond Hill.
