Wrestling team places fifth in Wildcat Invitational

MOULTRIE — Austin Paradice finished first at 145 pounds to help lead the Colquitt County wrestling team to a fifth-place finish at the Wildcat Invitational on Saturday in Valdosta.

The Packers also got a second-place finish from Ethan Sellers at 120 pounds. Deontae Edwards and Nate Taylor took third-place finishes at 152 pounds and 160 pounds respectively.

The Packers will be back on the mats this Friday and Saturday in the Knockout Classic at Osceola High School in Kissimmee, Fla.

Colquitt County then will play host to the  third annual Packer Classic on Jan. 3-4 at the high school.

Paradice earned 31.5 points for the Packers with his first-place finish.

After receiving a first-round bye, Paradice won by a fall over Kemorrion Newberry of Turner County.

In the quarterfinal, he faced Colquitt County teammate Clinton Folsom and won by fall.

In the semifinal, Paradice won by fall over Cairo’s Duwalt Duvenhage.

The Colquitt County sophomore took first place with a technical fall over Nolan Smith of Coffee.

Sellers defeated Colton Mitchell of Berrien, Conner Bruner of Lee and Domnik Iverson-Medina of Lowndes before falling to Kaleb Davis by 6-5 decision in the first-place match.

After a first-round bye, Edwards defeated Cedric Wynn of Lee County, but then lost a 9-5 decision to Canyon Hebb of Lowndes.

Edwards then defeated Daviyon Johnson of Thomas County Central, Christian Boston of West Laurens and, in the consolation semis, won over Matthew Smith of Columbia. He won by a 9-4 dedision over Valdosta’s Cedric Stewart in the third place match.

Taylor also received a first-round bye, then won by fall over Luca Fiannca of Clay.

In the quarterfinal, Taylor lost by fall to Jake Tyre of Pierce County.

But Taylor rebounded to win over Micah Perdue of Florida, Ronald Lee of Coffee, David Lowe of Lee County and, in the third- place match, won by fall over Coffee’s Garrett Kelley.

Also for the Packers in the Wildcat, Alek Rosales was fifth at 138 pounds; MarKaybion Spradley was fifth at 170 pounds; Jayson Brown was sixth at 113 pounds; and Folsom was sixth at 145 pounds.

Clay High was first with 219 points and was followed by Coffee with 202 points. In third was Lowndes, with 179 points, followed by Valdosta at 173 points and Colquitt County at 171.

Colquitt was just two points out of fourth and eight points out of third.

Lee County was sixth with 169.5 points and Tift was seventh with 140.5.
