THOMASVILLE — Pirates get a bad rap, most likely because of their no-good shenanigans at sea.

However, not all pirates work on the high seas. Some lurk on land looking for packages delivered to residences.

“We have not had a rash of incidents here, but it is that time of year,” said Maj. Wade Glover, Thomasville Police Department public information officer.

Glover said delivered packages should not be left outside residences for an extended period of time. A neighbor or relative should be asked to pick up the packages, or they could be delivered to another residence where someone will be at home.

Online shopping increases constantly, Glover said, adding that shoppers should use package tracking methods provided by businesses shipping ordered merchandise.

Cameras in doorbells are a big deterrent to porch pirates, but being at home for deliveries is the best safeguard, the officer said. Tracking will help customers know when packages are scheduled to arrive.

Patrols are being increased citywide. Glover said the police bike team and officers in vehicles are aggressively patrolling business and residential areas of the city.

TPD will issue alerts on social media and through the press if package thefts appear to be on the rise.
