MOULTRIE – Having nothing to do with her last name, Katlynn Powers went deep with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday. Colquitt County High, hosting the GHSA 7A second round in softball for the first time, used that home run to top Nortcross High 1-0 in Game 1 of the best-of-3 series at Packer Park.

With one more win, Chance Pitts and the Packers qualify for the Elite 8 for the first time in fast-pitch. That takes place beginning Oct. 24 in Columbus.

Jade Horne of Colquitt battled Bella Krauth of Norcross to a scoreless deadlock going into the seventh. Horne struck out two batters to end the top half after Faith Lawrence doubled to left.

Krauth set downt the first two she faced in the bottom of the seventh, but Powers deposited a 1-0 pitch to near straightaway centerfield.
