LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Inspections could address health threats

I have been concerned for quite some time about the issue of lead-based paint in many of our older properties in the City and County.  I am thankful that the City has adopted the International Property Maintenance Code which addresses health and safety issues such as lead-based paint.

According to the Mayo Clinic, lead-based paint and lead-contaminated dust in older buildings are the most common sources of lead poisoning in children.  Even when exposed to small amounts of lead, children may appear inattentive, hyperactive and irritable.  And children exposed to higher lead levels may also have problems with learning and reading, delayed growth and hearing loss.  And at high levels, lead can cause permanent brain damage and even death in children.

Most lead poisoning in children results from eating chips of deteriorating lead-based paint.  Even though lead-based paint for homes, toys and furniture has been banned in the US since 1978, lead-based paint is still on the walls and woodwork in many older homes and apartments if they have not been upgraded.

Hopefully one result of the City’s property maintenance code will be safer and healthier living conditions for children in our community.
