MOULTRIE, Ga. — A former county employee who oversaw inmates in his role with the Public Works department was indicted last month by the Colquitt County Grand Jury.

Johnathan Williams was accused of providing inmates with cell phones, marijuana, food and drink items, and tobacco, according to court documents.

The grand jury indicted Williams on four charges: two counts of furnishing prohibited items to inmates, one count of crossing the guard lines with drugs and one count of violation of oath by public officer.

The indictment alleges the offenses happened between Sept. 27, 2018 and April 4 of this year.

In comments at the time of Williams’ arrest, Colquitt County Correctional Institution Warden Billy Howell said officials at the CCCI found cell phones during a shakedown April 3. Williams was charged the following day and the

county terminated his employment the day after that.

During the course of the investigation officers learned that the activity involved smuggling phones, tobacco and drugs into the prison, Howell said. Police believe that Williams was being paid for his part in the scheme.

“As correctional officers and law enforcement officers we know we’re not to have personal dealings with prisoners, for obvious reasons,” Howell said. “We fight contraband every day.”

Other indictments handed down by the grand jury in September include:

• Christopher Dee Hood, four counts aggravated stalking.

• Tanika Latrice Townsend, exploitation and intimidation of disabled adult, elderly person or resident.

• Juan Gustavo Deleon, aggravated stalking and criminal trespass.

• Milton Anderson, child molestation (4 counts) and sexual battery against a child under 16 (3 counts).

• Antonio Burkes, child molestation (2 counts).

• Tonya Young, aggravated child molestation (2 counts) and statutory rape (2 counts).

• Gene Smith, rape.

• Luis Vazquez, aggravated sodomy, aggravated child molestation, child molestation (2 counts) and enticing a child for indecent purposes (3 counts).

• William Phillip McMahan, criminal damage to property in the second degree and criminal trespass.

• Kenneth Sparks, terroristic threats and harassing communications.

• Christopher Troy Tyler, criminal damage to property in the second degree, making a false statement and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.
