TIFTON, Ga. — Tift County volleyball celebrated Senior Night Tuesday and the Blue Devils added one more to an already record-setting season.
The Devils won their 20th game of the 2019 season, defeating Brooks County in straight sets, 25-9 and 25-12.
“I feel great,” said head coach Caleb Dawson about securing win No. 20. “That’s a big win.”
Tift had already surpassed the previous school record of 12 wins in a season. Twenty, he said, just meant a bit more.
Brooks County’s Trojans led 7-6 in the first set, but Tift scored the last eight points to coast. The hosts did not trail at all in the second set, jumping out to a 3-0 advantage.
The visitors scored the first point and Tift seemed shaky went they went up 4-2. Then Macy Weldon got a kill and Rebecca Jinright served an ace. The score was tied at 4-4 and the Devils started to settle down.
Brooks took its last lead at 7-6. Tift tied it up and Weldon took over serving. Five aces and a Cali Conner kill later, the score had turned into a rout at 16-7. Shelby Braswell dealt three aces before Annah Daniel finished off Brooks with a kill.

The Devils did not put together any scoring streaks as long as in the first set, but Brooks never threatened.
Conner had three spikes for kills in the second set. Jinright, Braswell, Daniel, Chayla Lopez and Alexandria Beccera all served aces. For Daniel, it was a rare opportunity to serve and one Dawson said he promised her if the opportunity presented itself.
Daniel, Conner and Heather Wells were all very active at the net during both sets. Lopez, normally a setter, added a kill in the second set.
Up by double-digits late, Dawson subbed in several of his younger players.
Prior to the varsity contest six seniors were announced: Wells, Elisa Melendez, Alyssa Sparks, Jinright, Daniel and Lopez. Each was presented a framed photo autographed by teammates, flowers, personalized T-shirts and a container of candy. Teammates held up signs for each in the stands.
Tift County principal Kim Seigler and athletic director Rusty Smith shook hands with each senior.
Dawson described his 12th graders as “a good crew.”
Two players, Melendez and Sparks, are first-year players whom he said made an immediate contribution. Daniel and Wells “have improved measures.” Lopez and Jinright are both four-year players, Jinright being the libero. “Their leadership is unmatchable.”
