MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Moultrie community is coming together to support the family of a child hit by an SUV last Wednesday.

Children of the neighborhood where Tripp DeMott lives set up a lemonade stand on Saturday to raise money for their friend, according to Whitney Smith, the adult whose house on Creekside Way hosted the stand.

Smith said some of the children were playing with Tripp Sept. 11 and saw the accident happen. They were upset and wanted to find a way to help, she said, and they settled on the lemonade stand. All proceeds will go to the DeMott family for “whatever he needs,” she said.

Tripp DeMott turned 7 on Sept. 15, four days after he was hit. He’s still at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, where he was taken after the accident.

The Georgia State Patrol said Tripp was riding his bicycle and rode into the path of a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by a neighbor. No charges were filed.

Tripp’s school, R.B. Wright Elementary School, urged students and faculty to wear red — his favorite color — last Monday in a show of support.

The Moultrie YMCA immediately began selling red ribbons for $10 each to benefit the DeMotts. Many Moultrie businesses and the city Municipal Building had them on display within days of the accident. The ribbons are on practically every mailbox in Tripp’s subdivision.

DeMott Tractor Co. is selling T-shirts with the logo “TrippStrong” for $20 and a vehicle decal for $5. Tripp’s father is sales manager of the company.

The Golden Apple retirement home on Fifth Avenue Southeast displays a large banner showing its support.

Relatives started a GoFundMe page — www.gofundme.com/f/zd9spu-trippstrong — on Sept. 13, and it has received 146 donations totaling $12,175 of its $20,000 goal.

Scotty DeMott, Tripp’s father, posted about the family’s gratitude on his Facebook page.

“WOW! The word that comes to mind when our families attempt to comprehend all of the support we have received over the last 9 days,” he posted on Friday.

“It has truly been overwhelming.

“Above Tripp’s bed in his hospital room is a picture that reads ‘Brave Little Warrior.’ And that he is. We have seen miracle after miracle in this journey watching him be that ‘Brave Little Warrior.’

“Tripp is making progress each day and he continues to amaze us. His numbers are good today and he continues to improve. We do ask that you will continue to stand with us in prayer for Tripp that God will continue the healing in his body.

“Your prayers and support have enabled us to make it.

“We love each of you and thank the Lord you are in our lives,” he wrote.
