MOULTRIE, Ga. — A Tallahassee woman accused of striking two children with her car last October was sentenced Friday to five years in prison followed by 10 years on probation.

Monica Mae Cutts, who was 25 at the time of the accident on Thigpen Trail, pleaded no contest to homicide by vehicle in the first degree and serious injury by vehicle. Seven other charges were dismissed.

Cutts was sentenced to 15 years on each of the two counts, but the sentences will be served concurrently, according to Superior Court Judge Richard Cowart’s order. Cowart also fined her $3,000, ordered her to pay restitution of an amount to be determined, and ordered her to perform 200 hours of community service.

Cutts was returning to Tallahassee from Atlanta Oct. 25. She was on Thigpen Trail shortly before 7 a.m. when her 2008 Kia Sephia struck 10-year-old Noah Palmer and his 6-year-old brother, Dylan Wolfe, in front of their house. The boys were crossing the road to get to their school bus, which was stopped in the opposite lane.

Palmer was taken by helicopter to a Macon hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Wolfe suffered a broken jaw and stayed in the hospital until the next day, his mother said.

According to reports, Palmer tried to shove his brother out of the way of the oncoming car, and the older boy received a posthumous award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s South Georgia chapter.

Cutts was indicted in March on nine charges, which included meeting or overtaking a school bus and distracted driving; the indictment alleged she was texting at the time of the accident.
