MOULTRIE – Even those who have followed Ty Lee’s football career after he took his quickness, speed and reliable hands to Middle Tennessee State four years ago might not have known this.

According to his biography on the Middle Tennessee State football website, the former Packer, who is in his fourth season as a starter for the Blue Raiders, entered the 2019 season as the NCAA’s active leader in career receptions with 213.

Pretty impressive.

He caught four more passes Saturday for 52 yards in Middle Tennessee’s 40-21 loss to Michigan at The Big House in Ann Arbor.

Heading into his final season in Murfreesboro, was third all-time on the school’s reception list; was fifth in receiving yards; and third in touchdown receptions.

He also now has caught at least one pass in 41 straight games, just two short of the school record.

Lee caught 118 passes while at Colquitt County from 2013-2015, including 23 for touchdowns. His final touchdown catch was on a pass thrown by Chase Parrish to help the Packers defeat Roswell 30-13 in the 2015 state championship game.

He and his Middle Tennessee teammates will try to even their record when they play host to Tennessee State on Saturday.

• Former Colquitt County High assistant coach Brent Brock is in his 14th season on the Middle Tennessee staff.

He is in his third year as director of football operations under Blue Raiders head coach Rick Stockstill.

Brock and Stockstill were teammates at Florida State.

• Redshirt freshman Kaleb Dawson recovered a fumble and returned it eight yards in Appalachian State’s 42-7 season-opening victory over East Tennessee State last Saturday.

The Mountaineers will be home in Boone, N.C., next Saturday to play host to Charlotte.

• Ty Phillips started at nose tackle for Georgia Southern on Saturday when the Eagles lost 55-3 at LSU.

The 6-foot-3, 290-pound senior, who received honorable mention on the All-Sun Belt Conference team last year, was credited with two assisted tackles.

The Eagles will be in Statesboro next Saturday to face Maine.

• Although he didn’t start, safety Tirise Barge was credited with a tackle in Tulane’s 42-14 season-opening victory over Florida International last Thursday.

Tulane will travel to Auburn on Saturday.

• Georgia State is still celebrating its 38-30 upset of Tennessee in Knoxville last Saturday.

The victory was Georgia State’s first over an SEC or Power 5 opponent. Georgia State has been playing football just 10 years.

Freshman linebacker Marcus Anderson did not play for the Panthers, but three former Packers were on the field for the Volunteers, who were outscored 24-13 in the second half.

Shawn Shamburger started at “Star” position for the Volunteers defense and had four solo tackles, two assists and a 12-yard sack.

Jay Blakely played off the bench had a solo tackle. JJ Peterson also got some playing time.

Georgia State will be home to play host to Furman on Saturday, while Tennessee will play Brigham Young at Neyland Stadium.

• T.J. Smith continued to start at defensive tackle for Arkansas in its 20-13 win over Portland State in its opener.

Smith, a 6-foot-3, 293-pound senior, had an assisted tackle and a quarterback hurry.

Last year, Smith was named to the Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll and the SEC Community Service Team.

The Razorbacks will play at Ole Miss Saturday.

• Quan Stokes is a junior playing on the offensive line at Faulkner University after performing the last two seasons at Northeast Mississippi Community College.

Faulkner, which won its opener 38-19 over Bluefield College, will travel to Columbia, Kentucky, to play Lindsey Wilson College on Sept. 14.

• Jamiyus Pittman was removed from the Miami Dolphins roster last week as the team got down to 53 players.

Pittman played briefly last year for the Dolphins, but spent most of the season on the practice squad.

• Colquitt County head coach Justin Rogers said he left a talented roster behind when he moved from Jones County to take over the Packers this season.

He appears to be right.

The Greyhounds are 2-0 under new coach Mike Chastain, having defeated Howard 34-10 and Baldwin 27-0.

Jones County will meet 1-1 Northside-Warner Robins on Friday.

Chastain spent the last three seasons at Warner Robins, where he went 29-12 and was the Class 5A state runner-up the last two seasons.
