JASPER, Fla. — The Hamilton County School District is calling off school Tuesday due to the threat of Hurricane Dorian.

The district announced the decision Friday morning.

Normal school operations are scheduled to resume Wednesday for students and staff unless otherwise notified.

The district announced it will announce any further changed, as dictated by the weather, in a timely manner.

The decision was made after consulting with the Hamilton County Emergency Management.

Dorian, based on Friday morning forecasts from the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center, is expected to make landfall in Florida on Tuesday morning in south Florida as a Category 4 storm.

While its path is still uncertain, projections have it turning north once it makes landfall and traveling up the state, potentially from the Atlantic coast all the way to the Gulf coast.

Projections have the impact of the storm reaching North Florida later in the week, although tropical storm force winds may arrive in the Suwannee Valley as early as Monday.

Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 26 Florida counties on Wednesday and extended it to the entire state Thursday.

The Suwannee River Water Management District issued an emergency order for its entire district Friday in preparation of the storm.

The emergency order outlines response measures and eases regulatory guidelines to allow for the aid of emergency assistance to private citizens and local governmental entities. 

Response measures include the use of pumps to move water across drainage basins, cleanup of drainage systems, repair of structures to prevent flooding and the creation of drainage systems to provide flood relief. 

The emergency order covers the all the counties within the district: Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lafayette, Levy, Madison, Putnam, Suwannee, Taylor and Union.

Hurricane Dorian is expected to bring heavy rains to many of the counties within north Florida. The SRWMD encourages residents and business owners to be prepared for potential flooding.
