- Workers spent Wednesday morning and early afternoon trying to stabilize the old Lafayette State Bank building in Mayo after a truck crashed into it.
MAYO, Fla. — A single-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning shut down Main Street and caused power outages in town.
A dump truck, driven by 56-year-old Arthur Toler, of Ocala, was headed east on U.S. Highway 27 (Main Street) at 5 a.m. Wednesday morning when it raveled onto the shoulder due to excessive speed entering a left curve near County Road 300, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

When Toler overcorrected to the left, the truck struck a utility pole and fire hydrant before crossing both lanes of Main Street, the FHP report states.
The truck ran into the old Lafayette State Bank building, stopping with its front end just inside the building.
Main Street remains closed for building repairs and work on the power lines, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office.
Toler was not injured in the crash. He has been charged with careless driving.
