MOULTRIE, Ga. — Both novice and professional farmers can come and get a leg up on the competition at the SCORE South Georgia Farm Tour.

The tour, running from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 12, will cover crops, bees, pecans, blueberries and citrus with the goal of introducing new industries to partake in.

SCORE co-chairman and tour organizer Lisa Zeanah said she’s looking forward to seeing all 50 seats filled.

“This is purely for people who are thinking about extending their farming capabilities past what they’re already doing,” she said. “We want to help.”

The idea for the tour came out of Zeanah and some of SCORES’s ag mentors looking for ways to use a recently acquired $5,000 grant from the national SCORE organization.

After revisiting last year’s citrus tour and looking at the exit surveys received then, they saw attendees enjoyed being introduced to citrus crops.

“A lot of people won’t go into citrus or want to do [it],” she said. “Overwhelmingly (however), citrus was one that they really wanted to go visit.”

After deciding the topic of the tour, Zeanah chose the farms accordingly. They include Rossman Apiaries and Craftwood Farms in Moultrie and Florida-Georgia Citrus in Monticello, Florida.

The original plan was to go to Craftwood Farms in Boston, Georgia, but its owner decided to choose a closer farm property.

Zeanah said they will arrive at Rossman Apiaries by 9 a.m., Craftwood around 10:15 a.m. and be at Florida-Georgia Citrus by noon.

Anyone interested can register here and receive a pass for $25. Registration closes Sept. 6 and seating is limited. As of Aug 26., 15 out of 50 seats are taken.

The initial meet-up will be at the AG Complex located at 350 Veterans Parkway North in Moultrie.

“Our ag mentors are really excited about this,” Zeanah said. “I’m really hoping that anybody who wants to go into these specialty industries will come and join us.”
