MOULTRIE – Warner Robins jumped out to an early  14-0 lead and went on to defeat Tift County 24-10 on Friday at Brodie Field in a season-opening football meeting between two teams that Colquitt County will have to contend with later in the season.

In other games featuring future Packers’ opponents on Friday, Thomasville fell to Cairo, 45-21; Valdosta ha little trouble with Maynard Jackson, 55-7; Grayson won in Madison, Ala., defeating James Clemens High, 23-13; Homecoming opponent Alcovy was blanked by Newton 45-0; Trinity Christian lost its opener at Columbia (Fla.), 38-7; Lowndes crushed Drew, 69-6; and Camden County rolled over West Forsyth 47-6.

In Tifton, the Blue Devils scored in the second quarter and trailed 14-7 at the half and then pulled to within four on a 35-yard field goal by Raul Mendoza with 11:14 left in the game.

But the Demons added a touchdown and a field goal of their own to pull away.

The first Warner Robins touchdown came on a pass from quarterback Jalen Addie to Jaymere Bryant and Addie later scored on a 12-yard run to give the Demons the 14-0 lead.

Addie, who completed 13-of-24 passes for 150 yards, set up his touchdown run with a 25-yard pass to Marcayll Jones and a 46-yard strike to Ty Carr.

Joe Almond completed 10-of-25 passes for 111 yards in his first start at quarterback for Tift County. Walter Jackson carried 23 times for 105 yards for the Blue Devils.

Warner Robins will play host to Locust Grove on Friday while the Blue Devils will travel to Valdosta, where they will meet the 1-0 Wildcats.

Valdosta blocked three punts, forced two turnovers, recovering a fumble for a touchdown, and grabbing an interception in taking down the Jaguars for the second straight year.

The Wildcats also got a 95-yard touchdown return of the second half kickoff by Jaheim Bell that helped put Valdosta up 35-0.

Preseason All-State quarterback Tate Rodemaker completed 5-of-8 passes for 96 yards and a 45-yard scoring pass to Bell.

After playing North Gwinnett on Saturday in the Corky Kell Classic, Colquitt County will be off next Friday and then will play host to Thomasville on Sept. 6.

The Bulldogs gave up 28 points in the third quarter at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday in its loss to Cairon.

Syrupmakers quarterback Matthew Peters threw for two touchdowns and ran for two others, including one on an 80-yard burst on the first snap of the second half.

Thomasville, which trailed 31-7 at one point, will travel to meet crosstown rival Thomas County Central on Friday. The Yellow Jackets opened with a 45-20 win over Early County.

Grayson, which will visit Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium on Sept. 27, went to Madison, Ala., on Friday to defeat James Clemens High 23-13 to give Adam Carter a win in his first game as the Rams head coach.

Rams quarterback C.J. Dixon completed 16 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns to Ryan King, who had five catches for 109 yards in the game. King also had a 2-point pass reception.

A.J. Lopez had two interceptions for Grayson, who began the season ranked No. 5 in Class 7A.
