MACON, Ga. – Colquitt County Farm Bureau Young Farmers & Ranchers (YF&R) Committee Chairman Preston Jimmerson and his wife Kendall won the 2019 Georgia Farm Bureau YF&R Achievement Award.
The award recognizes young farmers and ranchers who earn the majority of their income from production agriculture. The contest included a written application and an on-farm visit by judges to gauge the competitors’ ag efforts and leadership.
The Jimmersons own Moss Family Farms, growing row crops, cabbage, timber and pecans on 2,450 acres. Preston also performs custom cotton harvesting for other area farmers.
The finalists were honored and the Jimmersons were announced as the winners during the 2019 GFB YF&R Leadership Conference on Jekyll Island in mid-July. The other finalists were Steven and Tara Green of Spalding County and Mitchell and Becky Pittman of Toombs County.
The Jimmersons will represent Georgia in the competition for the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) YF&R Achievement Award, which will be announced in January during the AFBF Convention in Austin, Texas. As the state winner, the Jimmersons receive $500 cash, a four-seat John Deere ATV and trailer, a year’s use of a Kubota M Series tractor and an expense-paid trip to the 2020 AFBF Convention.
The GFB Young Farmers & Ranchers program is designed to provide leadership development, educational and social opportunities for farmers between the ages of 18 and 35.
Founded in 1937, Georgia Farm Bureau is the state’s largest general farm organization and has 158 county offices. Its volunteer members actively participate in local, state and national activities that promote agriculture awareness to their non-farming neighbors. GFB offers its members a wide variety of benefits, including insurance, but enrollment in any of the member benefits is optional and not a requirement for membership.
