BRANFORD, Fla. — After spending the week at Camp Blanding for preseason camp, the Branford football team will get an early look at their team this weekend.

The Bucs will be one of four teams participating in an officials scrimmage Saturday morning at Bell High School. Joining Branford and the host Bulldogs will be Dixie County and Williston. The scrimmage is set to start at 9:15 a.m.

The Bell scrimmage is one of 19 officials scrimmages set for this weekend — Thursday through Saturday — across the state in which 16 different Football Officials Associations will partake as well as more than 100-plus schools participating.

According to the Florida High School Athletic Association, the goals of the officials scrimmages are: Common football officiating curriculum provided by FHSAA and taught by our top officials with the goal of statewide consistency; Coaches and Officials question and answer session to bridge the gap between the two groups; Train all officials with instant on-field feedback; and Encourage Associations to use the training to help develop playoff crews.

Branford will not play in a Kickoff Classic game Aug. 16. After the officials scrimmage, the Bucs’ next action against an opponent will be the Aug. 23 season opener against St. Francis.

Suwannee to scrimmage Friday night

Suwannee High, meanwhile, will wind down preseason camp with an intra-squad scrimmage Friday night at the conclusion of its “Day with the Dogs” camp.

Suwannee’s scrimmage is set for 7:45 p.m.

Prior to that, SHS will host its inaugural children’s camp from 9 a.m. to noon for students in first through sixth grades. Current SHS football players and cheerleaders will help instruct during the camp, which costs $10 and includes lunch. Registration will be held from 8-9 a.m.

Those attending the camp will also be invited to a media day event Friday evening from 6-7:30, which will include meeting the players, cheerleaders and coaches. Snow cones will be available as will games for the children to play.

Morrill helps Anglers reach playoffs

Former Suwannee baseball standout Hueston Morrill helped the Chatham Anglers reach the postseason in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League.

Morrill, who was a freshman at Oklahoma State, hit .247 in 27 games for Chatham with five doubles and 19 runs scored.

Helping the Anglers advance to the postseason where they were eliminated by Harwich in the East Division Series, Morrill heated up down the stretch. In his final 10 games in the summer wooden bat baseball league featuring collegiate standouts from across the country, Morrill went 12-for-36 in his final 10 games with four doubles and six runs scored.

Morrill also pitched twice for Chatham, including two shutout innings Thursday in which he struck out five of the seven batters he faced.
