Thursday was Hawg Wild Day at Packer Cheer Mini Camp, and the top costume was Journey Johnson, the trophy.

MOULTRIE – If nothing else, they are learning an important phrase: “Go Pack.” The parents and grandparents will find that out at the week-ending pep rally.

Colquitt County High’s cheerleading program hosted its annual Packer Mini Cheer Camp this week at the gymnasium, and Thursday was one of the more fun days called Hawg Wild. Patti Wier, Packer cheerleading and gymnastics coach, said their turnout this summer was 106 young ladies from entering pre-K to entering 8th grade.

Wire knew for sure the Hawg Wild winner would be Journey Johnson, who stood out among the costumed cheerers by portraying a trophy.

“It’s where they show the most spirit they have for our Packers,” she said.

For Mini Camp, the girls go from station to station, one that is game-style cheerleading and stunts, another is to learn dance moves and tumbling associated with competition cheer, and two others are fun crafts and snacks.

“They learn dances, cheers,” said Wier. “We change the material every year so those who are returning are not doing the same stuff. This is where we build our program, right here, our future cheerleaders.

“They get all components of cheerleading, whether they want to be a sideline spirit or competition cheerleader.”

All returning varsity and JV cheerleaders are a big part of the camp. They are the instructors and the organizers and the holders for the big “Go Pack” pep rally roundup.
